If there’s one thing that calms my mind, it’s an organized space. But if you walk into our house at any given moment, you are likely to find toy cars scattered across the floor and stacked on top of blocks, dress-up clothes trailing down the stairs, and a couch covered in stuffed animals. That’s pretty much our every day scene on our main floor living space. And as long as there is a narrow path for me to walk safely through while holding a baby, I’m okay with that for now. Because that’s life. If you then venture upstairs to the bedrooms, there is a bit more order. Mainly because we play up there only a fraction of the time as we do downstairs. But I do love playing and just being in our kids’ bedrooms. The girls are proud of their rooms and what they’ve helped them become and I hope Guyguy feels the same one day too.
We already had most of the big items (dresser, glider, and crib) as they’ve been passed down from the girls. Instead, we were only left to find the fun stuff for Guy’s room– items for a gallery wall, some room accents, and tools to organize all the little things. Here are three IKEA finds we used to give us some order:
1. RASKOG Utility Cart (Diaper Caddy)
I wanted a diaper caddy that was easily accessible, offered storage for more than just diapers, and something that could be repurposed after a diaper caddy was no longer needed. The RASKOG Utility Cart granted us all of that at just $25. After setting it up, I liked it so much that we got a second one (also used as a diaper caddy) for the living room. I’m already dreaming up of using them as art supply carts for when we don’t need them for Guyguy. They would also be great to use in a guest bath with towels, toiletries, and extra TP. Or even as a nightstand in the right space.
2. KALLAX Shelf (Closet Storage)
The closet in this room is pretty shallow. But I love how it is now used as an extension of the main space. Since we painted it the same blue as the opposite accent wall, it seems more connected to the main room. At least one closet door is usually open, inviting access to the KALLAX shelf. We chose it in the “gray/ wood effect.” At only $65, this unit was the perfect size for such a specific area and super affordable.
3. SKUBB Boxes (Drawer Storage)
The SKUBB collapsible drawer bins are so handy in kids’ rooms. Since tiny humans have tiny clothes (go figure), their things otherwise get buried and pushed to the back of the drawer. But these handy little compartments house everything and help keep it all in order. We use the “box with compartments” and the “set of six” configurations. You need these in your life.
So yes, it’s great to be organized, but my favorite pieces in Guyguy’s room hold a lot more meaning. Scattered around his room, there is something representing each of his Grandpa’s and Great Grandpa’s– and that’s what makes his rooms so special. From Great Papa’s farm team baseball glove to a coin from his Great Granddad, Guyguy is surrounded by feel good things from all his older guys. And also a couple drawings from his big sisters.
And it’s a good thing I like Guy’s room so much because I’m currently in there most of the night as of late. If anyone has any advice on getting over this 4 month sleep regression, I will owe you big time. Yet despite him not getting the best sleep, he is such a happy baby. Every stage is so short and temporary, so I’ll take the extra evening snuggles. Have a great week, friends!
