It is a smidge bit ridiculous how much I love this little project. From watching Mya intricately color each wooden bead to holding the tangible finished product in my hand, it is something that I will always cherish. I’ve never prayed on a rosary or used any string of beads in prayer, but holding these in my hands somehow makes me feel more focused and connected to my thoughts and thanksgivings.
WHAT YOU NEED
wood beads
sharpie markers
paracord
scissors
paintbrush or chopstick (optional)
WHAT TO DO
1. Color each wooden bead. To minimize the mess and make it easier for your kiddo to color each bead, “thread” each bead on a paint brush or chopstick and have them hold the stick while creating.
2. String each bead onto the paracord, separating each bead from each other with a knot. We created a long chain with one looped end.
3. If desired, create fringe on the ends by knotting 1 inch from each end. Then cut away outer paracord material to expose inner rubberband-like material.
This probably goes without saying, but I’m going to blab on anyway: Make sure when gathering the supplies, that you double check that the paracord strand will fit through the bead holes. The first cord I selected was too thick and didn’t fit through. Womp womp.
Also, if you’re not into the whole prayer bead thing, you could easily make cute key chains using only 3 or 4 beads on each and some key rings. If I really got my act together, I would have Mya create another bead bunch and do this for Christmas presents. Though I’m pretty sure the hazard of that would be me wanting to keep them all!
For now, I have Mya’s beads on my nightstand. They’re one of the last things I see before going to bed, which makes me go to bed smiling. So if you’re looking for a fun, easy, and super special project to do with your little human, this one is a winner! Happy beading, friends!
